Surprise Proposal Photography in Central Park, Manhattan & Brooklyn

Planning a Proposal in New York City

Proposing in New York takes a bit of planning, especially in busy places like Central Park or along the waterfront. I usually help think through the practical side of it - mainly from the perspective of light, location, and timing.

We choose a spot and a time of day when the light works well and the area isn’t overly crowded. Before the proposal we go over a simple plan so you know exactly where to walk and where to stop.

We usually share live location so I can see when you’re getting close. I always arrive earlier, and whenever it’s realistic I try to clear the immediate area around the spot for a minute or two so the moment feels a bit more natural and private.

Things don’t always go exactly according to plan - this is New York after all. But after photographing dozens of proposals around the city, I’m used to adjusting on the fly. Every proposal ends up looking a little different, but so far they’ve all had the same answer.

This is what it looks like in real life

And there’s always a brief shoot after — or longer if you’d like

I can also capture a short video — either with a professional camera if video is the priority, or with a small one as a bonus to the photos.

Best Central Park Proposal Locations

Central Park offers many beautiful locations for a proposal shoot, with great views, scenic paths, and a classic New York atmosphere. Instead of focusing on the most famous spots - like Bethesda Terrace Arcade or Bow Bridge - I highlight locations that work better for a proposal and photography.

Many of the iconic areas become extremely crowded during the day and evening, which can make the moment feel less private and harder to photograph naturally. The locations listed here offer the same Central Park scenery but usually provide a bit more space and calm for the proposal itself.
